Number 1495: Boody, Babe, Stanton and kinkiness

Người đăng: Unknown on Thứ Hai, 23 tháng 12, 2013

“The Mysterious Case of Mystery Mountain,” which was published in Babe, Darling of the Hills #8 (1949) has an aura of kinkiness. It has some startling panels, especially if you are unfamiliar with artist/creator Boody Rogers. Boody’s stuff often had a very oddball slant, so this isn’t all that out of line with his other work. It got its reputation from being published by Art Spiegelman in his Raw magazine years ago, and then again when it became known that Rogers’ assistant at the time was Eric Stanton, who had his own reputation for drawing kinky material. Google his name and you’ll see.

Stanton, unknown year. Stanton is caricatured in the story as Pinto Pete.

I scanned this story from my copy of the comic, which at one time was wet, so there was color bleeding throughout the book; I have done my best to clean up the scans.

It's time to bring back Boody! Boody Rogers, a cartoonist whose stories were not only well drawn, but funny and bizarre. This is a good example. “Babe and the Dying King” is a comical situation that is as strange as it is hilarious.

Hillbillies were in during the 1940s, seen in movies, novels and comic strips, so why not a funny hillbilly comic book? Babe Boone is the female L'il Abner Yokum. Her parents are even “Mammy” and “Pappy.” The comic book lasted for eleven memorable issues, and produced some classic stories. Some of those stories (along with examples of Rogers' Sparky Watts and Dudley) can be found in Boody, the Bizarre Comics of Boody Rogers, edited by Craig Yoe, published by Fantagraphics in 2009. Boody is still available from the usual outlets, including Yoebooks, Fantagraphics, or even your favorite comic book store if they will be nice enough to order it for you. It gets my highest recommendation.

Babe and the Magic Lamp

Boody, a book of Boody Rogers' comic book stories, compiled by Craig Yoe and published by Fantagraphics, will give you an outstanding look at the entertainment Boody Rogers produced during his career in comics in the late 1940s.

There are examples from Sparky Watts, Babe, and a story from Dudley. At least a couple of the stories have been seen here. All the stories Craig has chosen are good. It's a book I highly recommend.

Here's a story from Babe, Darling of the Hills #10, 1950. It's full of the same inventiveness, manic energy and fine cartooning we expect from Rogers. If you want other stories of Boody's buxom beauty, or any of the other Rogers stories we've shown, type Boody Rogers into the search engine in the upper left corner.
